DENVER, CO – 6 FEBRUARY 2018 – Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. (PSB), owner of the international CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification program outside of the United States, reported another year of growth in 2017, as the FPSB network added 15,726 CFP professionals and the total number of CFP professionals rose to 175,573 worldwide. With a net increase of 5,472 CFP professionals, FPSB and its member organizations experienced annual growth of 3.2%.

“To establish financial planning as a recognized global profession, FPSB has set itself an ambitious goal to have 250,000 CFP professionals in 40 territories by 2025,” said Noel Maye, CEO of FPSB. “With a global CFP professional growth rate of 3.2% last year within the FPSB network, and talks underway in over 10 additional territories, FPSB is making solid progress in its efforts to increase the public’s access to competent and ethical financial planners, who work in their clients’ interest.”

Of note in 2017 was the considerable growth in the United States, which boasts the longest running CFP certification program – CFP Board continued its strong showing with a net growth of 3,275 CFP professionals last year (accounting for 60% of the net global growth). FPSB’s member organizations in the Republic of China, Brazil and Japan produced an additional 30% of the global growth, adding 645, 490 and 468 CFP professionals respectively by the end of last year.

Within the 26 nonprofit member organizations of FPSB, member organizations in Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Brazil and Ireland returned impressive double-digit growth. FPSB’s member organization in Brazil remains a standout performer for the fourth year in a row with both solid net growth (490 new CFP professionals) and rate of growth (16.8%). FPSB’s member organization in Chinese Taipei added an impressive net number of 247 CFP professionals, for a growth rate of 25.1%, while the CFP certification bodies in Ireland and Thailand added net numbers of 77 and 68 CFP professionals, for growth rates of 16.2% and 37.6% respectively over the previous year.

Growth – both in terms of adding more CFP professionals in existing territories and expanding CFP certification to new territories – is a key focus area for FPSB. The sustained CFP professional growth year-to-year, along with increased interest in CFP certification from new territories, greatly supports FPSB’s vision to establish financial planning as a recognized global profession.
